Description
To provide an introduction to Ore Deposit Geology, Geological Mapping, Air
Photo Interpretation, Rock Cutting and Petrological Microscopes, by means of a
practical module of field and laboratory work.

A pass mark of 65% must be obtained on each of the following four assessment
groups:

- 30% at least three practical tests, covering the practical
skills learned in the laboratory sessions

- 10% laboratory exercises
Learners must pass, in aggregate, assessment of exercises completed in the
laboratory and outside schedule laboratory time. Marks are to be assigned for
correctness, completeness, organisation and neatness.

- 30% field trip maps and reports
Learners are required to do a minimum of 17 hours of field work. At least one
day is to be spent on geological mapping, preferably air photo mapping, with
the production of a geological map and report. The remaining time may be used
for conducted excursions, involving activities such as the completion of field
sheets or questionnaires. Learners must pass, in aggregate, assessment of maps
and exercises from the field trips.

- 30% final written test covering all material in the module.
Learners must pass a written theory test or examination, consisting of multiple
choice, short answer and essay questions on a selection of competencies
outlined in this module. It is suggested that an adequate coverage of this
material would require a theory test of between 1½ and 3 hours.
