Description
To investigate the various types of structures, construction methods and
maintenance techniques used in the Nursery Industry.
To operate and maintain a range of environmental equipment utilised in nursery
production.

Range of Variables
To allow credible competency-based training and assessment, the class size MUST
NOT exceed fifteen learners.
Delivery is to take place in a classroom with immediate access to growing
structures and associated equipment and/or at suitable nursery locations in
industry and/or on site visits to suitable locations.
Practical work will usually take place in a suitable nursery environment
observing all safety precautions as per health and safety regulations.

Internal Assessment 100%
This subject is to be assessed internally using competency as a measure of
learner achievement. The learner is required to demonstrate competency in each
of the learning outcomes in line with the assessment method shown.
Assessment will be based on an appropriate selection of the following methods:
- Short written explanations or procedures
- Longer written and/or oral tests
- Practical demonstration of the special maintenance procedures required
on nursery greenhouses and specialised equipment
- Completion of suitable activity book
- Multiple choice questions
- Compulsory special interest assignment on materials available for
covering greenhouses
- Completion of maintenance records applicable to nursery structures and
equipment
- Objective tests
NOTE: A 70% pass is required on all written tests to ensure industry
standards are maintained and all safety aspects associated with correct
maintenance procedures are covered.
Students must have ready access to:
- A commercial type of heated glasshouse or suitable tunnel house with
thermostatically controlled bench heating and misting and/or fogging equipment
- Suitable greenhouses containing benches, cladding, ventilation
systems, evaporative coolers, heating equipment, lighting apparatus, thermal
screens and computer type environmental control equipment.
- Suitable nursery growing areas
- Irrigation, injectors, drainage systems associated with a commercial

- Storage facilities for fertilisers, chemicals, tools, equipment, live
plant material and machinery associated with Nursery operations.
