Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to carry out metal finishing, incorporating heat shrinking, to repair vehicle body panels. This unit involves preparing for the task, selecting and using specialist tools and equipment, setting an oxyacetylene plant, panel beating and file finishing vehicle panels to pre-paint condition without using body fillers, and completing workplace processes and documentation.The unit applies to those working in the automotive body repair industry. It does not cover aluminium panels.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to repair vehicle body panel using metal finishing
  • 1.1 Determine job requirements from workplace instructions
  • 1.2 Access and interpret repair information from original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or authorised agency’s specifications
  • 1.3 Identify hazards associated with the work and manage risks
  • 1.4 Select and check materials, tools and equipment for serviceability
  • 1.5 Plan work to identify repair methods, minimise waste, and use time efficiently
2. Carry out metal finishing and heat shrinking activities
  • 2.1 Repair components using OEM or authorised agency’s required methods and equipment
  • 2.2 Remove dents using hammer and dolly techniques, and file finish panel surface to pre-paint condition
  • 2.3 Apply heat shrinking if panel surface is over stretched using an oxyacetylene plant
  • 2.4 Use dust and fume collection equipment during repair process according to safety and environmental requirements
  • 2.5 Seek and organise assistance where repair of components disturbs vehicle trim or electrical, mechanical or air conditioning systems
  • 2.6 Check repairs to ensure work is completed to workplace, OEM or authorised agency specifications and requirements
3. Complete work processes
  • 3.1 Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use
  • 3.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Complete documentation according to workplace procedures
