Description
This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required by workers who undertake the design, construction and modification of specialised seating and associated equipment for people with disabilities based on multi-disciplinary assessment.
Rehabilitative and assistive technologists may work in hospitals, health centres or non-government organisations.
Their role includes:
Assessment of technical aspects of client needs under the supervision of an relevant health professional
Technical specification, design and construction or modification of assistive equipment to meet client needs;
Development of designs for original equipment if not commercially available;
Maintenance of the workshop
Inventory management
This qualification is suited to Australian Apprenticeship pathways.
Occupational titles for these workers may include:

ENTRY REQUIREMENTSThe following requirements apply for entry to this qualification:
- Certificate III in Engineering Fabrication or equivalent or
- Attainment of the following units of competency:
MEM09002B Interpret technical drawing
MEM12001B Use comparison and basic measuring devices
MEM12002B Perform electrical/electronic measurement
MEM18001C Use hand tools
MEM18002B Use power tools/hand held operations
AHCINF204A Fabricate and repair metal or plastic structures
PACKAGING RULES
Sixteen (16) units of competency are required for award of this qualification, including:
- eleven (11) core units
- five (5) elective units
- Group A elective which is required for work in rehabilitation and assistive technology
- Group B - rehabilitation and assistive technology electives - at least two (2) units must be selected
- Group C electives which are recommended for culturally aware and respectful practice
- Other relevant electives listed
- Units of competency to address workplace requirements and packaged at the level of this qualification or higher in Health and/or Community Services Training Packages
- Where appropriate, to address workplace requirements, up to two (2) units of competency packaged at the level of this qualification or higher in other relevant Training Packages or accredited courses where the details of those courses are available on TGA or other public listing
