To develop communication skills identified in
Communication (Common Core).

To develop oral, reading and writing skills
appropriate to students seeking an apprenticeship or
similar vocation.

To provide opportunities for the development of
attitudes and commitment necessary for professional
and interpersonal skills.

To encourage independent enquiry and personal
improvement in the mechanics of written
communication.

The following guidelines are provided as suggestions
for assessable exercises. Where applicable, a
representative from the trade area may be invited to
co-assess relevant work, files or activities, e.g.
simulated interview situation or technical
description.

Research involving use of library and aids, e.g. a prepared talk.

Preparation of a structured report, e.g. workshop
safety; work experience.

Knowledge of basic business skills, e.g. taking
messages, filing, job cards, filling in forms, as
appropriate to specific trade requirements.

A letter file to include enquiry, order, claim and
adjustment, sales letters.

The ability to participate effectively in a meeting,
possibly in the context of a Rostrum or other
service organisation situation.

Development of job-seeking skills, further to the
Common Core job application package, e.g. personal
presentation, interview techniques.
